Ardán Banna Ceoil

“ARDÁN BANNA CEOIL” / 2022 /3.4m x 3.4m x 2.4m high/ Galvanized Laser-cut Steel, Wood.

Our piece “ARDÁN BANNA CEOIL” is situated at Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn in an Irish speaking primary school in Cork City. The piece was commissioned by the school after we won an open competition run by the National Sculpture Factory.

We created “Ardán Banna Ceoil”, a bold multi-coloured canopy that serves as a circular performance space with seating for 30 pupils. When the sun shines dramatic shadows are cast onto the floor space completing the circle, changing the spatial relationship and adding a new dimension to the sculpture.

“The figures with their arms outstretched are reminiscent of cut-out paper dolls. Hands morph into birds and butterflies that morph into books. These are all metaphors for the power of knowledge and learning.”

The aerodynamic structure is made from mild steel and hot-dipped galvanizing, polyester coated and combined with Accoya wood seating: all bolted together to give the piece strength, durability and stability to deal with the exposed weather conditions that the school experiences.
